Who Was Lady Blount?

When reading old flat earth booklets, you often come across a person named Lady Blount. So, who was this person? We read from wiki.tfes.org:

Sometimes known as Zeteo, Lady Elizabeth Anne Mould Blount was a vocal advocate of Flat Earth theory in late 19th and early 20th Centuries and one of the founders of the Universal Zetetic Society. She worked extensively with Albert Smith (‘Zetetes’) to propound their Flat Earth viewpoint. Lady Blount was a devout Christian and her writings used a mix of scriptural and experimental arguments to support her views. Blount’s wealth and social status allowed her access to England’s social elite. Her Universal Zetetic Society’s first membership roster includes an archbishop, major-general, scholars and a number of other aristocrats. By practically all accounts, Lady Blount was likable and good-natured, balancing out some of the more contentious members of the Flat Earth movement at the time.

In addition to her work with the Universal Zetetic Society, she was also poet, songwriter and wrote pamphlets on a wide variety of subjects. Blount was a progressive thinker and humanitarian. She was a vegetarian and – like Marjory Johnson – an anti-vivisectionist, often using the Earth Not A Globe Review to “cover these subjects in flowing prose and verse, alongside references to her work as president of the Society for the Protection of the Dark Races”.

In 1898, Lady Blount published a novel titled Adrian Galilio, or a Song Writer’s Story, a fantastical story about an aristocrat who escapes her unhappy marriage and reinvents herself as a world-famous Flat Earth proponent who “tours Europe giving elaborate lectures on cosmology, the creation, true love and hell”.

Confessions From The Church of Rome, 1616

The confessions of the Church of Rome, when confronting the then Astronomical innovator, Galileo, who recanted and publicly confessed that his doctrine of the earth’s motion was false:

I  The proposition that the Sun “is the centre of the World and immovable from its place, is absurd, philosophically false, and formally heretical; because it is expressly contrary to the Holy Scriptures.

II  The proposition that the Earth is not the centre of the world, nor immovable, but that it moves, and also with a diurnal motion, is also absurd, philosophically false, and theologically considered, equally erroneous in faith.

And so we say, pronounce and by our sentence declare, degree, and reserve, in this and in every other better form and manner, which lawfully we may and can use. So We, the subscribing Cardinals pronounce.”

We are often advised by well-meaning Christians, who are ignorant of the bearings of our contentions, to allow the subject of the plane flat earth and to “drop it.” They content that just proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Here is what what one person wrote:

“You believe the earth is flat and stands still. I may give it a passing notice. I am surprised to find a man of so much intelligence and learning should persist in such notions. It is not a clear fact that we can determine the approximate size of the globe. And if you go in a straight line in any direction you will come to the place from which you started, and how do you account for the Seasons, and the differences in the length of days at different Seasons, and the tidal motions, etc? I think you would be better engaged in helping to swell the world-wide cry of the Gospel. Don’t you think so?”

You may have experienced something like this. You might have heard, “What difference does it make?”

In answer to the last question we say decidedly, “No!” Not at the expense of leaving off teaching the plain truth. It is undeniable that the Holy Scriptures teach that the earth is stationary; that it rests on “foundations” and “pillars”; and that it is “established so fast that it cannot be moved.” We, therefore contend that if, as some of our Christians friends would have us believe, the Bible is not true in its material teachings respecting the Universe, it is not reliable in its promises of spiritual blessings. In fact these very same Christians would be confronted by atheists that would say, “Since you believe in a spinning globe earth, when your Bible says that it’s stationary and on pillars, how can you believe in Jesus Christ? How can you believe in the rest of the Bible?” To which, the average Judeao-Christian would either have to do some back-tracking, or their own faith would come into doubt.

But we maintain that the Bible is true; true to fact and to every day observation; and that the earth does not move. We have a right to ask for one proof, and we only ask for one, of the earth’s supposed terrible motions? It appears stationary. It fells stationary. Then why should we give up the evidence of our God-given senses for the sake of a mere astronomical and unsupported assumption?

There is much more behind this question of the shape of the earth than our good natured but illogical advisers are aware of. If we are credited, we are by those who know us, with at least an average share of common sense, and a little more than the average amount of intelligence and learning, how is it that our advisers – who for the most part never really studied the question – how is it they cannot credit us with understanding this subject, which we have studied, and with understanding its importance as supplying a good foundation for our confidence in the sure Word of God? We maintain that if the Bible is not true respecting the material Creation, it is not reliable in its promises of Salvation; and that it is perfectly useless to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to men who have lost their faith in the inspiration, or truthfulness of the World of God. It is, moreover, a great pity when Christian friends unite with sceptical foes in support of a godless science, falsely called “science,” (as the Apostle Paul wrote), which strikes at the very foundation of the truth of the Creator’s Word. They incur a grave responsibility in so doing. Let them take heed.

In answer to our correspondent’s questions, we say, it is not “a clear fact that we can determine the approximate size of the globe.” It is not a clear fact that the earth is a globe at all! Let proof be offered. And again, it is not possible “to go in a straight line in any direction, and come back to the place of staring.” Any “straight line” is an impossibility on a spherical surface. But apart from this self-evident fact, no one has ever travelled on voyaged due North, or due South, and come back to the same place again. The great ice barriers would prevent this. Yet our correspondent thoughtlessly says, “in any direction”! Men can go round the world in an easterly or a westerly direction; but this is also possible on a plane. Hence it is no proof of the earth’s sphericity. But our opponents do not seem to be able to discriminate in these things. It is the faulty, doubtless, of our system of “education,” which crams young minds with other men’s ideas, instead of teaching them to think for themselves, and to think cautiously and accurately.

Let us hope that Christian Flat Earth Ministry will help, at least, to raise enquiry, and so teach men to think for themselves; and not to leave all their thinking to professional and interested preachers of “science”. Let us hope that all lovers of truth – natural truth or spiritual – and all lovers of original ideas, possessing true freedom of thought, will rally round us, and help us on towards a world-wide circulation of the truth in all its forms.

2  There are also passages showing that the waters surrounding the earth have their bounds on the great southern circumference. Job 26:10 “He has compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.” In margin, “until the end of light with darkness.” In the R.V. It is, “He hath described a boundary on the face of the waters, unto the confines of light and darkness.” Job 38:8-11, “Who shut up the sea with doors when it brake forth. When I made the cloud, the garment thereof and thick darkness a swaddling band for it. And prescribed for it my decree (or boundary) and set bars and doors, and said, hitherto shalt thou come, but no farther, and here shall they proud waves be stayed.” And far out there on the southern circumference, are solid and impassable ramparts of ice, barriers – cliffs of ice – forbidding the further progress of daring navigators. It was so with Captain Wilks and Jas. C. Ross. Well, you ask: Do the Scriptures mention these solid walls and barriers of ice out there on the southern circumference? Yes, they do. Job 38:30, “The face of the deep is frozen.” The daring navigators on the southern seas, who have told us of the solid walls of ice – the barriers and cliffs of ice – disclose to us the meaning, the sublime meaning of such passages as Job 38:30; Ps. 33:7.

The earth and ocean together constitute an immense circular plane, according to the other “book” of God, Nature. There are phenomenal proofs that the earth is not a globe, with north and south poles, but that the earth is a plane, having the central region for its north, and, the southern circumference for its south.

Long periods of light and darkness, regularly alternating is a phenomenal peculiarity of the north, but not of the south, and proves that the north is the central region, and the south is the circumference.

During the summer solstice, the northern or central region of the earth is illuminated for several months together, during those months it is a long day without a night. This is a phenomenal characteristic of the north. This being the central region, the diameter of the sun’s orbit in June is much smaller than that of its December or winter solstice, its speed is not so great or rapid as it is in December when on its outer path, or orbit on the Tropic of Capricorn, consequently its rays continue over the northern centre for several months. But in the south this is not the case, though it would be if the earth were a planet. In the south, on the contrary, the day closes abruptly in summer, they have little or no twilight. In the south seas beyond the 50th parallel, the sun will be shinning brightly, and, in a very short time, the sailor who happens to be aloft, will be in pitch darkness. The sun seems to drop below the sea. At Auckland, New Zealand, there is little or no twilight. At Nelson, it is light till about 8 o’clock, then in a few minutes it becomes too dark to see anything, and the change comes over in almost no time. Twilight lasts but a short time in so low a latitude as 28 degrees south, according to Capitan Basil Hall, so that from 28 degrees south, to beyond 50 degrees south, there is little or no twilight. But, in the corresponding latitudes north, the twilight continues for hours after visible sunset. In the north at midsummer, for many nights in succession, the sky is scarcely darkened.

The difference between north and south with regard to organic life, vegetable and animal, show that the earth and ocean is a circular plane. The long periods of sunlight in the north, develop with great rapidity numerous forms of vegetable life, and furnished subsistence for multitudes of living creatures. But in the south, where the region is circumferential (not central as in the north, the sunlight cannot linger, but sweeps quickly over the greater southern circle, completing it in the same time as the shorter circle of the north, viz., 24 hours, and so has not time to excite the surface, has not time to aid and stimulate animal and vegetable life to the same extent as in the north, consequently in comparatively low southern latitudes, everything wears an aspect of desolation.

Kerguelen Island

The South Georgia’s latitude 54 and 55 degrees in the very height of summer, is covered deeply with frozen snow; but in the farthest north, nature is adorned with summer beauty; flowers and grasses bloom during a brief and rapid summer. Kerguelen, 49 degrees south, boasts 18 species of plants, only one being useful in cases of scurvy, it is a peculiar kind of cabbage; but Iceland, 65 degrees north, 15 degress nearer the pole in the north, boasts 870 species. Kerguelen’s land, or, Desolation island, was discovered in 1772 by M. de Kerguelen, a French Navigator. Here December corresponds to our June. According to Captain Morrell Kerguelen is situated in the latitude 48 degrees, 40” south, longitude 69 degrees 6” east. Many of the hills on this island, though of moderate height, were covered with snow, notwithstanding that the season was midsummer. January corresponding to our July. There is not the appearance of a tree or shrub on the whole island. Captain Morrell, 1822 to 1831, in latitude 62 degrees 27”, longitude 94 degrees 11” east, met with extensive fields of ice, one of which would have measure 150 miles, east and west.

Kerguelen Island

The bones of musk oxen, killed by Eskimos, were found on the 79th parallel north, while in the south, man is not found above the 56the parallel of latitude.

These differences between north and south could not exist, if the earth were not a globe, turning upon axis and moving in an orbit round the sun. the latitudes corresponding north and south, would have the same degree of light and heat and the same general phenomena. The distance round a globe would be the same at 50 degrees south as at 50 degrees north, and the surface at the two places would pass under the sun with the same velocity, and the light would approach in the morning and recede in the evening in exactly the same manner. There would be a sameness of phenomena north and south, if the earth were a globe; but the differences are in harmony with the doctrine of the circular plane of the earth and ocean.

The meridian lines diverge southwards, and the degrees of longitude increase accordingly; but if the earth were a globe, the degrees of longitude northward or southward from the equator would diminish.

From the known distance between two places in the south on or about the same latitude, and the difference of solar time (or difference in longitude) we can calculate the length of a degree at that latitude.

There is an agreement between the word and works of God. The allusions of the word to the works are strictly accurate, and the facts of nature attest that accuracy.

The works of God are magnificent; but their magnificence is diminished and misrepresented by fanciful theories at variance with His word. To maintain the connection is to hold fast an important truth; which is a delightful duty, and is one of those few things by being faithful to which we may be “ made rulers over many things.”

According to the book of Revelation, the word “world” is used more than 260 times in the Bible, and the word “earth” 350 times. The words “round” or “globe” or “sphere” are never once applied to it. Not a single expression is used from the beginning of the inspired book to the end, suggestive of the idea that the earth is a planet, or, suggesting that the earth is anything else than a stationary plane.

1 – Passages speaking of the heavens above as “stretched out,” and the earth spread forth and stretched out upon the waters, so that the line of the heavens is parallel with that of the earth – Isaiah 42:5; Psalm 136:6. “To Him that stretched out the earth above the waters.” Psalm 24:2. “He has founded the earth upon the seas and established it upon the floods.” Genesis 1:10, informs us that the waters were gathered together unto one place, and called seas, and upon those seas the earth was founded, consequently the waters are beneath and around the earth. The waters sustain the earth, sustain the earth as a whole. 2nd Peter 3:5. “For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing or consisting out of the water and in the water.” R.V. Reads: “For this they wilfully forget that there were heavens from of old, and an earth compacted out of water and amidst (or through) water, by the word of God.” Compacted – held together – leagued with – united. The earth is one – the continents appear to us who are on the surface as being a great distance apart, yet these continents are joined together; they are connected in the water and together they constitute one earth. These connections keep down in the water of continent with continent, are themselves sustained by the waters underneath. “The waters under the earth.” Those waters under the earth, sustain the earth as a whole; sustain the earth in its entirely. “The earth compacted out of water and amidst water by the word of God.” The dry land above, or out of the water compacted, united with, the earth in the water and that again compacted, united with, the other continents amidst or through water.

The continent of America is compacted, united with the continents of Europe and Asia, amidst throughout the water of the Atlantic. The continent of Africa, though connected with Asia by the Isthmus of Suez, yet is compacted, united with Asia and Europe amidst or through the water of the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, and probably Arabian Sea. Australia compacted, united with Asia amidst or through the water of the Indian Ocean.

As the heavens are spread out above, and the earth stretched out upon the waters, so the line of the heavens is parallel with that of the earth. That is the reason why the heavens seem to close or touch the earth at the horizon. They are parallel. Parallel lines appear to converge in the distance. In a long tunnel, the floor appears to rise to a level with the eye at the entrance, and the roof to come down to a level with the eye, they are parallel; so with the earth and sky, they are parallel. The distant horizon appears on a level with the eye, and the sky in the distance seems to descend to a level with the eye. This has been observed by anyone flying a passenger jet. At their greatest elevation, the horizon seemed to be on a level with the eye, and the sky in the distance seemed to close with the horizon.

This parallel is not just an imaginary line but a force; this is force, some call it the law of density, is why water seeks its own level. Earth has to be level in order for builders to build homes that are level. A builder’s level works the same in Spain as it does in Argentina and it can only happen on a flat earth.

This is according to the law of perspective, parallel lines appear to converge. In Isaiah 40:22, we read: “It is He that sitteh upon (or over) the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants are as grasshoppers.”

it is not said here “circle of a globe,” no, but “circle of the earth.” He sitteth over the arctic circle and beholdeth to the ends of the earth. The earth being stretched out upon the waters, and therefore in its general configuration it is a plane, it is flat; the centre of the earth is north, the circumference is south. The ends of the earth, the extremities of the earth are out towards the southern circumference. Cape Horn is an end, New Zealand is an end, Tasmania and Cape of Good Hope are ends. The great God sitteth over the circle of the earth – over the north centre and seeth to the ends of the earth. Isaiah 45:22. “look unto me and be ye saved all the ends of the earth.” We could not live on a globe – a globe resolving on its axis and shooting away through space it its orbit round the sun. it would be impossible to live upon it, constituted as we are. In Isaiah 45:18; “Thus saith Yahweh that created the heavens. God Himself that formed the earth and made it; He hath established it, He created it not in vain, He formed it to be inhabited.” He says: “I am Yahweh and there is none else.” A revolving globe – a planet earth would not be habitable. A planet earth, such as the modern astronomers speak of, is a thing of the imagination; it does not exist in nature. It is a vain thing; it is not the habitable earth. What a cutting rebuke is here in these few words in Isaiah to the modern astronomers, the followers of Copernicus and Sir Isaac Newton! What a contract to their theory. God formed the earth and made it’ it became a reality; He established it; He created it not in vain; He formed it to be inhabited. Can you apply these words to the planet earth of Copernicus and Sir Isaac Newton? “Formed the earth and made it, established it.” Is it so with the planet earth? No. It is not formed, not made, not established; it has no real, material existence. It is just a thing of the imagination, supposition, hypothesis. God created the earth not in vain, He formd it to be inhabited.

God said, let the dry land appear, the dry land did appear. Let the waters be gathered together unto one place, and the waters flowed into the place appointed for them, beneath and around the earth. Here we are on this earth – living, moving, working, trading, buying and selling. This earth is a real earth, it is inhabited as God meant it to be, and some of our fellow beings go down to the sea in ships and see the wonders of God on the great waters. This earth is a real, material earth, and this material earth, really, unmistakably and without doubt, is compacted out of the water and amidst the water. But the planet earth of Copernicus and Sir Isaac Newton is not real – it has no material existence, it is fictitious and visionary.

Truth is great and must prevail, so that all who are taught, led, or persuaded to contend for the impossible, must sooner or later knuckle down to the possible, the inevitable, and the true. Man’s nature, since the fall, is so constituted that imposture has more hold on his intellectual faculties than truth; and that which is false, can attin much more readily and universal acceptance than that which is true; thus a lie, once made to fit, can get round the world while truth is putting its boots on.

It has been thus with modern astronomy, which is considered by all the educated and learned, to be such a certain, settled and intellectual science, that they are disgusted with the least hint that this boasted science is founded on a scanty and baseless foundation; but the truth will out, and if any man wishes to be wise, even in the things of this world, he must be willing to commence fool, that he many we wise. Prince Bismarck, said, “I have always endeavoured to learn new things, and when I have had, as consequence, to correct an earlier opinion, I have done it at once, and I am very proud to have done so.” A Portsmouth tradesman, said, when spoken to on the subject of astronomy, “I am quie satisfied about it, and if I am wrong, I have no desire to be put right.” An American writer says, “The man who odes not care to learn if his decision is right or wrong, is not half a man.” This is a lamentable state of mind on matter, but on the subject of astronomy is very inconsiderate. Suppose Dr. Cousins, for instance, were to tell you that your heart was the breathing apparatus of your system, and the lungs, the organ that propelled the blood through your veins, you would think he was a long way from being an eminent Portsmouth physician; and rightly too, for no medical man could understand the human frame if his knowledge of physiology held such a baseless theory. It is precisely the same with the science of astronomy; no astronomer can be correct with the science, unless he understands fully the relative and active positions of the sun and the earth; the sun being the anima mundi, the soul and heart of the universe.

It matters not how may lines, angles, pretty wheels, and cat sticks they may draw, nor how wodnerfully they may seem to magnify, calculate and exaggerate the distances and magnitudes of the heavenly bodies; if they recokon on a reolving earth, and simply a staring sun, all is wrong. They make their boased knowledge the mere tool of astonishingness, not the natural or sublime science of astronomy.

Much will be the surprise to most readers to learn that all modern measurements of the heavenly bodies, is based upon the results of experiments, that really mane the peculiar position, and toss up a halfpenny. Mr. Richard Proctor – the great modern astronomy, tells us, “Anyone can tell how many times its own diameter the sun is removed from us. Take a circular disc and inch in diameter, a halfpenny for instance, and see how far it must be place to exactly hide the sun, the distance will be found to be rather more than 107 inches, so that the sun like the halfpenny which hides his face, must be rather more than 107 its own diameter from us; so that the supposed distance of 95,000,000 miles rests, probatum est, upon the peculiar position of one halfpenny. Whatever the half penny should happen to reveal, that decides and regulates the magnitudes, the distances and calculations of all the rest of the heavenly bodies, ad infinitum, to the world’s end. For he says, “We are so constituted as to seek after knowledge; and knowledge about the celestial orbs is interesting to us, quite apart from the use of such knowledge in navigation and surveying. It is easy to show that the determination of the sun’s distance is a matter full of interest, for on our estimate of the sun’s distance, depend our ideas as to the scale, not only of the solar system, but the whole visible universe.

When Reporters Use The Word “Allegedly”

Is This “Allegedly”?

Reporters have used and still are using the word, “allegedly” when writing an article. Or they may use some synonym, like, “reportedly, supposedly, reputedly.” Now, the definition of “allegedly” is:

“Used to convey that something is claimed to be the case or have taken place, although there is no proof.”

This is the sickness of the Leftists who hate all things that are good. I’m sure you have read many articles about murders, rapes and robberies that really happened and by the criminal named, and the word “allegedly” is used. This is used even when there are known facts such as video proof. Thus, the words: “allegedly, reportedly, supposedly,” etc. should not be used but it is. Why is this?

I find that the common thread for all this is:

  • the crime figures are being played down
  • outright denial that something has really happened
  • or, pushing some Leftists/Communist agenda

What brought me to write this article is, that in a recent RT News article, a reporter said, “More than 200 farmers from South Africa have applied for humanitarian visas in Australia after allegedly suffering attacks for being white, according to the Australian Home Affairs Ministry.”

Now, we all know for a fact that hundreds of White farmers have been brutally attacked, robbed, raped and their farms stolen from them. We also know that a video was made of the President of South Africa encouraging other blacks to kill and take (steal) the land from the White farmers. So, this is NOT “allegedly” but a FACT!

The reporters and talking heads on TV have been doing this for decades. And if you look at the articles or see the old video clips of news, it’s to make it look like either the crime did not happen or it’s did happen or that they try to down play it in some way.

It would be interesting to see if someone rapes and murders a reporter from CNN, for example. Would the CNN talking head use the word “allegedly”? Would she say something like, “Arnold Smith allegedly raped and murdered our reporter…” You can be sure that the words, “allegedly, reportedly and supposedly” would not be used. After all, they have to keep a double standard – one for us and one for them.

Startling Discrepancies Between The Facts and Modern Theories

Compare the following startling discrepancies between the true facts and modern theories; and then say if it is not a natural disgrace that we should prefer such baseless superstitions, for the mere credit’s sake of a few infidel scientists.

Modern astronomy and its crafty or, most deluded sycophants teach that “the sun is stationary and the centre of the planetary or celestial bodies, and that it is over one million miles larger than the earth!”

Whereas, it is not one thousandth part of its size – is constantly moving in spiral orbits, round and over the face of the motionless earth; increasing the latitude of those orbits about 10 or 11 miles every day from June to December, and decreasing them in the same proportion from December to June.

The astronomer now teach that the Sun’s distance from the Earth is from 92 to 93 million miles; whereas, it is proved to be under 2,400 miles, and the stars and planets even less than that.

So far from the Earth being a planet and “very much inferior in size to all the other planets but Mars,” it is no part at all of the celestial system; but is wholly distinct and far superior in size and character to all the planets put together, which exhibit very little variety in size among themselves, and no parallax whatever, when viewed under any possible conditions!

The astronomers again assert the earth to be revolving and rotating Globe, with an axial speed of over 1,000 miles an hour, and an orbital speed of over 1,000 miles per minute! Whereas, it is an absolutely motionless plane, surrounded by a barrier of impassable icebergs, extending into unknown regions, where “day and night come to an end,” or, in other words, cease to be distinguished, and will only be removed when “there shall be no more sea;” and a “new firmament and a new Earth” shall replace this sin-stained and misused world.

The astronomers teach an atmospheric pressure of 15 pounds on the square inch; whereas, it does not amount to half as many grains.

Gravitation (central), is the wildest fiction ever invented.

All Attraction – solar, lunar, central and magnetic, is purely conjectural and physically impossible.

The astronomers further declare that this globe has no material support, but is sustained and controlled in its terrific orbits by solar attraction only, at a distance of nearly 100 million miles; although Sire Isaac Newton himself declares the idea was “grossly preposterous and discreditable to any rational mind;” meaning, of course, that the “centripetal and centrifugal forces” were hypothetical conditions only, and like all the other data on which the Copernican theory was founded, were purely geometrical devices, which no one in their sober senses ever thought could be illustrated by an appeal to facts. But such was the ignorance or bigotry of his professional friends, that they would not allow even Sir Isaac Newton himself to publish his repeated disclaimers of being anything more than a mathematical inventor or formulator of a system which was in no degree dependent on the truth of his premises.

The rank of absurdity and downright impossibility of any one of its most elementary conditions, and the fact that no man of honour or scientific reputation would venture openly to defend it, ought to secure the instant rejection of it by every lover of truth in the world. The whole thing lies in a nutshell. All that is insisted upon is, that results or conclusions drawn from conjectural theories of philosophy, however plausible and apparently simple they may be, are wholly worthless and unworthy of any claim to rank as true science, till they have been proved correct by actual experimental demonstration, and can be thus confirmed and illustrated as often as their truth is challenged or denied. Even if a theory be true in the abstract, yet, if incapable of practical demonstration, it is not science, merely to suppose or assert it to be true. Newton himself was too sound a philosopher to attempt to illustrate the truth of the globular theory; he repeatedly discouraged all discussion, and, if left to himself, would never have attached his name or sanction to such a bungling absurdity.

This is the ground on which the ZETETICS take their stand, and all the professors in the kingdom will strive in vain to dislodge them; and, what is more, they are too cowardly to attempt it.

The above is so startling an exposure that the public press is ashamed to announce it; although the globular theory has been shown to be a Pagan superstition, unscriptural, irrational, unscientific, and physically impossible!

The true cosmogony of the Universe should be the primary subject, and one which ought to take precedence of every other on which the mind of a child can possibly be engaged. Ignorance of its true nature is a gross scandal on all connected with any phase of education, either religious or secular; and the imposition of a fraud which the intelligent child soon learns to detect, exerts a positive injury on the mind all through life. At the present moment there is not a teacher in the kingdom who would venture – to prove himself familiar with the most elementary principles of natural science; and yet the writer is abused for declaring the world is full of knaves or dunces. Even savages never boast of being wiser than they are, or teach their children what they know to be untrue.

Never before was there such a fuss made about education. Do we really know or only think we know ? Or is it learn, learn, learn,—and Jeave off no wiser than before? If bricks and mortar could make brain’s— j£ fine buildings could ensure great thoughts—if learned professors knew all that they profess, Thomas Carlyle would have belied his countrymen when he said we were a nation of “mostly fools.”

What is our standard of true knowledge? an imperfect standard is as misleading as defective weights If we deal with false analogies, we are only comparing true metal with an ingenious counterfeit!

What are we aiming at by these remarks? We mean to say and are able to prove that at this moment, we are living in an age of shams and false pretences, and that we are totally unfamiliar with the most elementary conditions of some of the most important subjects that can possibly occupy the attention of a professedly intelligent and commercial nation;— that even our Clergy and Theological professors do not yet understand the teaching of the Mosaic records;—that our Schoolmasters, on some subjects, do not understand or know more than their pupils; that even our nautical charts and tables would discredit a nation of savages; and that our geography and astronomy are just where they were left by our university authorities of two hundred years ago; and that the most eminent of our educational professors would not now venture to defend what our poor children are compelled to carry with them through life.

What shall we say to those “ Scientific” Journalists and Reviewers who persistently discourage any desire for discussion or ventilation of this importeint subject? Is it to hide their own ignorance or to display a mock contempt for any suggestion that runs counter to popular prejudice or opinion; or do they go so far as to imply that they cannot find among their numerous literary connexion, one individual writer who has intelligence enough to maintain his ground in a discussion with an honest

opponent ? It is a gross fraud on the credulity of the public as well as on the helplessness of childhood to enforce the acceptance of certain teaching which they are too ignorant to explain or too cowardly to defend.

If modem astronomical science could be shewn to be demonstrably true, how’ glorious would be the victory, and how, dire our confusion! But till they cease their insolent taunts and courteously show us our error and the inutility of our opposition, we shall certainly not cease to regard them as vanquished foes, who lack the moral courage to acknowledge their defeat.

And we can but trust that when Prof. This or Prof. That ventures to pose as a Scientist or as an oracle on scientific subjects, he will learn to exhibit a little more modesty and confess that for once in his life, he had to bow to the superior influence of common sense, and, above all, to the omnipotent authority of the inspired records.

As it is. Science is irredeemably prejudiced in the eyes of all honest men and can never again assume those insolent airs which have so frequently disfigured its encounters with the less dogmatic searchers after truth.
