Scriptures Versus The Fable Of The Revolving Earth
The hypothesis introduced by Nicolas Copernicus that the Earth
revolves on an imaginary axis has been accepted as truth by the great
majority for centuries, it has been taught in the universities, schools,
and colleges of the world as a proven fact; often have atheists and others
used it to scorn the Divine inspiration of Scripture, and pitiful indeed
has been the camouflage adopted by the supposed supporters of Divine
Writ—who in reality generally agree with their opponents on this
subject—whereas their very attitude was and is a denial that the
Architect of the World could have been the Author of the Book they
profess to uphold. Let it be stated as clearly as possible that the
Scriptures teach that the Earth is round and suspended into space,
this was taught in the Word of God centuries before any philosopher
geographer or astronomer had discovered it, long before Homer had
described the Earth as a disk supported by pillars. Job had correctly
defined it as follows :
“ He stretcheth out the North over the empty place, and hangeth the
Earth upon nothing.”
In several places in Scripture is the Earth clearly described as
being round, for instance in Isaiah 40: 22 we read “ It is He that
sitteth upon the circle of the Earth . .” Again in Proverbs 8: 27,
it is written : “When He prepared the Heavens I (Wisdom) was there;
when He set a compass upon the face of the depth.” The Scriptures
further teach that it is the Sun that moves round the Earth, and not
the Earth round the Sun.
“ The Sun also ariseth, and the Sun goeth down, and hasteth to
his place where he arose.”
The theory that the Earth is animated with a diurnal rotation was
started with the assumption that the heavenly luminaries are solid
planets like our Earth, and not as stated by the Lord God who made
them, “ Lights ” (Genesis i : 14). This erroneous conception gave
rise to the hypothesis that it would be easier to revolve one world than
a whole heaven of Worlds, but having began their argument with a
wrong assumption, it has made them wrong all the way through.
The principal luminaries are opaque as seen during the eclipses,
and this has been thought sufficient evidence to prove that they are
Worlds like unto our own, but the want of transparency is by no means
a proof of weight, a cloud, although opaque, is nevertheless lighter
than the air.
The results of recent research prove that the heavenly luminaries
are not Worlds, but lights, and should cause all men who have been
led to accept as proven Copernicus’ theory of the motions of the Earth,
to reconsider this subject. Professor H. H. Turner, of Oxford, made
the following statement regarding observations carried out on the
brightest Star in the constellation of Orion: “ The most exciting
discovery as a result of measuring this Star in the winter of 1920, and
1921, and 1922 is that the diameter is changing and it looks as if the
Star is palpitating as a heart does.” Which is precisely what a light
would do, and not what a body like our Earth could ever possibly do.
It is now acknowledged, and has long been acknowledged that
Newton was entirely wrong in his theory of light. “ Light,” according
to modem definition, “ is the result of force causing the waves of
ether to vibrate with an almost infinite rapidity. How great that force
is can be measured by the fact that light travels round the world eight
times in a single second.” This again explains the “ infinite rapidity ”
with which the “ Lights ” (Gen. i : 14) seen in the Heavens travel
round the Earth.
. . Swift is the Sun in his course, for he compasseth the
Heavens round about, and fetcheth his course again to his own
place in one day.” (i. Esdras, 4 : 34).
Claudius Ptolemy, the great astronomer, had the advantage over
Copernicus in that he was a geographer as well as an astronomer,
whereas the latter held some dignities in the cathedral of Thorn in
Prussia. As a geographer Ptolemy knew the absolute importance of
the stability of the four cardinal points, outside of which topography
and accurate orientation are an impossibility. Now the four cardinal
points are fixed points in the sky, as acknowledged from time
immemorial, hence we are able, by them, to plot correctly any given
point on the Earth.
Logically it would be impossible, if the Earth revolved, to make
use of the cardinal points as fixed points in the sky, for the relation of
any given place in the rotating Earth toward them must continually
change. It would be like attempting to plot a point within a fast
running wheel of a motor car in relation to a fixed spot outside.
The force of this argument is sometimes evaded by saying that
the cardinal points of the compass are imaginary points, but that
will never do. The most exacting sciences are based upon the four
points of the compass, such as the science of survey, cartography,
and, of course, navigation. Millions have trusted their lives upon
this reality of the four cardinal points. When the skies are covered
the captain at sea has only his compass and his chart to guide him, and
the life of one and all on board depends upon the points of the compass
being a verity.
“ The North and the South Thou hast created them.”
Psalm, 89; 12.
Everything in the Tabernacle built by Moses was carefully
orientated as also the Temple erected by Solomon, and all its ornaments.
And he (Solomon) made a molten sea, ten cubits from one brim to
another, it was round all about . . . It stood upon twelve oxen, three
looking toward the North, and three looking toward the West, and three
looking toward the South, and three looking toward the East . .”
(i. Kings, 7; 23, 25.)
The Great Pyramid of Ghizeh also demonstrates how careful
the ancients were in the orientation of their buildings, and wherever
these are in existence they show no deviation from their original
orientation, which fact alone proves that the Earth is not animated
with any motion at all.
“ The World also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.”
Psalm, 93 : I.
It is claimed that the revolutions of the Earth cause the Sun and
constellations to be overhead in different places of the Earth at times
worked out in nautical almanacs and used by navigators to determine
their bearings, but the same calculations will apply to the rising and
setting of the heavenly luminaries. Whether A moves from B, or
B from A, the effect can be the same.
The Phoenicians indeed made extensive use of the stars in
navigation, and their daring seamanship and skill can be measured
by the fact that they spanned the seas as far as Britain to the West, and
across the broad Pacific to the American continent to the East, and
they believed in the rising and setting of the stars. Mr. J. W. Perry
informs us that only one pearl-field in the whole World (the West
Australian site at Broom) escaped the vigilance and accurate knowledge
of the ancients.
Let us examine the so-called experiments which have been
instrumental in causing men to reject the statements of God and the
evidence of their own senses in order to uphold the imagination of
Copernicus.
Newton maintained that it was possible to prove the rotation of
the Earth by the means of balls dropped from a height to the ground,
he claimed that the said balls would it deviate Westward, but would
fall a little to the Eastward of a pumbline, about half an inch, he
thought, at the height of three hundred feet. The reason he gave
is this ; “ Since the top of the tower is at a greater distance from the
axis of the Earth than its base, the centrifugal force must be greater
at the former point than at the latter; the ball, in falling does not
lose its impulse, and therefore advances before its plumbline, which
strikes the foot of the tower, since it has a less impulse Eastward.”
Experiments were carried out to test this theory on January 14, 1680
by Robert Hooke in the presence of a committee appointed for the
purpose, when he tried to prove the rotation of the Earth by dropping
balls from a height of 160 feet. The results were considered so
unsatisfactory that they were not even mentioned in the Philosophical
Transactions and were entirely forgotten.
One hundred and twelve years later, a young geometrician in
Bologna, Guglielmini, tried the same experiments from the Tower
Degli Asinelli, in that city, at a height of 240 feet. These experiments
also failed to prove any movement of the Earth.
Benzenberg, a German, performed similar experiments in 1804,
from the steeple of the church of St. Michael, in Hamburg. He let
fall 30 balls, from the height of 235 feet; the balls deviated from the
perpendicular four lines Eastward and line Southward according
to the direction of the wind. This was not considered satisfactory
Benzenberg repeated these experiments in 1805, in a coalpit, at
Schlebusch, at the height of 260 feet: and according to the fall of these
balls, dropped in a black coalpit, which balls were claimed to have
fallen five lines Eastward, Laplace, the French astronomer and atheist,
calculated that the chances are 8,000 to 1 that the Earth turns round
on its axis. Like the oracle of Delphi the answer was given from the
bowels of the Earth, it would not speak from above the ground in the
three previous trials.
Seeing that this statement of Laplace was, so to speak, the
ex cathedra utterance of “ science ” on this subject, it is interesting
to note what Napoleon, who had made him minister of the interior,
said of him. “A geometrician of the first rank,” says the emperor,
“ he did not reach mediocrity as a statesman. From the first, the
consuls became sensible thattheyhadmadea mistake in his appointment.
He never viewed any subject in its true light; he was always occupied
with subtilties; his notions were all problematic . . . ”
Yet Protestants, who reject the infallibility of the Popes with
scorn, do nevertheless, accept the infallibility of such men as these
with fervour.
But let us assume that the experiments at Schlebusch proved
what is claimed for them, then the same principle there evolved must
apply to all other bodies that are independent of the Earth. An
aeroplane in flight is as much independent of the Earth as the aforesaid
dropping balls, and if these have a speed differing from, and
independent of the supposed speed of the Earth, then the same
characteristic must distinguish the aircraft; its movement also should
be independent of that of the Earth; in which case, such an
aeroplane travelling Westward to America from England should have
the full benefit of America rotating Eastward, and both the continent
of America and the aeroplane should meet, one above the other, in
about four hours. This statement and the balls dropped by
Benzenberg stand or fall together.
But how many are there among those who teach this fable as
truth, that have the courage of their convictions to the extent of
undertaking this flight, with say five hours supply of petrol ?
Ptolemy has indeed advanced similar arguments to prove the
impossibility of the rotation of the Earth, and to parry these they
have been obliged to imagine that the air participates in this motion.
If this were the case, the air would obviously travel in one direction,
viz., the supposed direction of the Earth, how could any aircraft
travel against such a furious blast ? How could such an accomplished
feat as sky-writing be carried out in such a tornado ?
Ptolemy shows very ingeniously that the Earth must be at the
centre of the celestial sphere. He proves that unless this were the
case, each star would not move with the absolute uniformity which
does characterise it. He shows also that the Earth could not be
animated by any movement of transition. “ The Earth,” argued
Ptolemy, “ lies at the centre of the celestial sphere. If the Earth were
to be endowed with movement, it would not lie always at this point,
it must therefore shift to some other part of the sphere. The move-
ments of the stars, however, preclude this, and therefore the Earth
must be as devoid of any movement of translaiton as it is of
rotation.”

If the Earth were going around the Sun, then the speed of the satellite would have to adjust due to the different gravitational pull of the Earth. When the satellite is behind the Earth it would have to “chase” the Earth. When in front of Earth, the Earth would chase the satellite. Since the Earth is supposedly going around the Sun with the speed of 107,534 km/hr, the speed of the satellite would have to DRASTICALLY change to account for the change of the gravity pull.
If the universe revolves around the Earth, Earth’s gravitational pull on the satellite would be the same regardless of its position on the orbit. Furthermore, the Sun and Moon’s gravities acting on Earth would balance. The Sun is bigger but farther. The Moon is smaller but closer.
1. The Earth doesn’t have centrifugal force. Gravity is the same all over the Earth because the Earth doesn’t move. If it did, the centrifugal force would make objects weigh TWICE less on Equator than for example in Vancouver, Canada.
2. Doing the same experiment with a SOUND WAVE fortunately can check this. Doppler’s effect would apply.
3. Michelson-Morley experiment doesn’t indicate that the light travels with the same speed independent of Earth’s motion. It indicates that the Earth is stationary.
4. Microwave radiation is 2.7 all over the Earth because the Earth doesn’t move.
5. Weight of objects would be affected depending on which side of the Earth they would be. The “density distribution” theory wouldn’t help, because it would have to change non-stop as the Earth rotates. If the weight of objects is not changing with the location on Earth, then the centrifugal force couldn’t possibly make the Earth bulge at the equator. That proves Newton wrong.
6. The Earth doesn’t have its “density” distributed so exactly as to ideally match the centrifugal force. Such argument is self-serving, arbitrary and logically invalid because there is no evidence to measure it and therefore to support it.
( Note Earth’s “density” for which there is no evidence other than that it “has to be this way” ).
7. The shapes of “constellations” don’t change over thousands of years.
8. Earth is the only planet with millions of life forms. The Bible mentions only life on Earth.
9. Only humans are capable of having a “point of view”, therefore it’s OUR point of view that matters as CENTRAL.
10. Copernicus didn’t provide evidence to support his theory.
11. Contrary to Copernicus, it’s not mathematically possible to “calculate” if the Earth is revolving around the Sun.
12. Newton’s thought experiment with a bucket of water, indicates that the Earth is not revolving. ( The water should sway if the Earth was revolving ). That’s a classic example of lack of centrifugal force of supposedly rotating Earth.
Now we know that the Earth is not flattened on the top and bottom. If that was true, objects would weigh differently.
13. On time-delayed pictures of stars, the Polaris star almost doesn’t move. The only way it can work is if both the Earth and Polaris don’t move. The Earth is therefore the centre of the universe and Polaris is its end.
14. The circular movement of stars on time-delayed pictures cannot be created by Earth’s rotation. If the Earth revolved the paths of stars would be horizontal not circular.
15. Satellites go around the Earth because the space around revolves, thus acting on satellites. You can even put a can of Coca Cola and make it a satellite.
16. The constellations don’t change, year after year.
17. Heavenly bodies don’t collapse together, because their attraction is perfectly balanced by equal centrifugal force resulting from revolving around the Earth.
18. The universe is found to expand AWAY from the Earth with EQUAL speed, that means that the Universe STARTED from the Earth.
19. God started to create the Universe from the Earth, why would a Perfect Being put it later somewhere else? Wouldn’t he put it where it was supposed to be right away? He is perfect so why would He NOT start from the CENTER, as the center is perfectly balanced and therefore requires less effort to start there. By the way, did I mention that the Bible says that God created the sphere of the Earth and hang it on nothing? That was when no human could imagine the Earth hanging on nothing.
The Bible also says that the Earth is MOTIONLESS. Since rotation is “motion” and there is no motion, hence the Earth doesn’t rotate.

Polaris Effect: On several time-delayed pictures there are shown circulating stars. Supposedly, because of the Earth’s movement around its own axis. However, their circulation is in the wrong direction…
If the Earth is moving around, then the stars should “move” horizontally, with slight bent upwards on northern hemisphere and a slight bent downwards on southern hemisphere. That’s because the Earth is a sphere. The stars should appear to move in the opposite direction to Earth’s movement.
In fact, the stars are moving in a circle, around the star Polaris. Hence, “Polaris Effect”. The stars on the outside of Polaris move faster. It is because the distance they travelled is bigger. They also move in unison, which proves that they are somehow connected.
To make it even more puzzling, the time interval of the film exposure does not match the part of the circle that the star would travel in that part of day. I mean if the time exposure is 4 hours, then if 24 hours is full circle then 4 hours should be one sixth of the full circle. However, it’s only about 1/12. The direction of stars’ rotation seems to be the same as Earth’s… If Earth is turning from left to right, then the stars should appear to turn from right to left! If the stars move from left to right, then Earth may be stationary. The Polaris star is always stationary. The only way a point can remain stationary, is when both the observer and the point are stationary, or both move in unison. Since the other stars move in unison relative to the Earth, then both Polaris and Earth must be motionless!

Ever since Victorian astronomers pointed their telescopes towards Mars and wrongly believed they had discovered canals, mankind has been obsessed by the red planet.
Now these astonishing new images – captured by a European spacecraft in orbit around Mars – are helping to fuel that fascination.
They show in astonishing detail a network of giant valleys, vast plains and towering waterfalls carved into the surface of our neighbouring planet, millions of miles away.
And while Mars today appears lifeless and parched, they are a reminder of how its surface was shaped by fast flowing streams, rivers and oceans.
The pictures were captured by the European Space Agency’s Mars Express Probe – a spacecraft the size of a large fridge-freezer that has been circling Mars since Christmas 2003.

Mars Express infamously gave Britain’s ill-fated Beagle 2 probe a lift to Mars. While that mission ended in disaster, the Mars Express has been a fantastic success.
Over the last five years its stereo, high resolution camera has taken thousands of images of the surface, revealing the planet’s awe inspiring beauty in unprecedented detail.
The latest images show the Echus Chasma, a vast valley just north of Mars equator around 62 miles long and six miles wide. The feature is cut into a high plateau and its steep-sided cliffs – some 12,000 feet high – bear a striking resemblance to the canyons of North America.
Thunderous waterfalls may have once plunged over these cliffs, from the high Lunea Planum plateau that surrounds the Echus Chasma, on to the valley floor below.
Some of the images show a five mile wide impact crater formed when asteroids – lumps of floating rock in space – smashed into Mars. Others show a 15 mile long dyke formed when molten rock, evidence of Mars’s volcanic past.
At the edges of the main valley lie smaller light-coloured tributary valleys or “sapping canyons” – around six miles long and 1800 feet deep.
The Echus Chasma – described by Nasa as one of the largest water sources on the planet – is connected to a much bigger valley system called the Kasei Valles which extends thousands of miles to the north.
Both valleys are impressive – but are dwarfed by an even larger canyon which lies to the south. The Valles Marineris is four miles deep in places, around 120 miles wide and 2,500 miles long.
The images were created by combining pictures taken from different orbits. The images can be viewed from different angles in three dimensions
Mars Express launched in June 2003. The craft is a cube around 5ft by 6ft by 5ft with two 60ft long radar antennae. It is photographing the entire surface of Mars in high resolution, producing a detailed colour map of the minerals on the surface, mapping the atmosphere and probing beneath the surface using radar.
Interest in Mars is at an all time high. Nasa and ESA have announced plans to bring back rocks and soil samples from Mars, while Nasa has three probes on the planet – two rovers and its Phoenix polar lander, which arrived in May.
The Phoenix has scraped ice from beneath the surface of Mars and is analysing samples in its laboratory to see if the planet has the right chemicals needed for life.
In 2013, ESA is planning to launch ExoMars – a robotic rover than will explore the planet’s surface. If successful, it will be Europe’s first mission to the Martian surface.
Scientists unveiled plans on Monday to bring back rocks from the Red Planet as a preliminary step to putting a man on Mars.
Professor Monica Grady, at the Open University, co-chaired the expert panel that wrote the mission proposal.
She said it was a vital next step before considering a crewed mission.
‘If you can’t bring a rock back you are not going to be able to bring people back,’ she said.
Railroad Tracks Prove the Earth is Flat
The civil engineer would have to be different if the earth is a globe.
J.C. Bourne in his book, “The History of the Great Western Railway” stated that the entire original English railroad, more than 118 miles long, that the whole line with the exception of the inclined planes, may be regarded practically as level. The British Parliament Session in 1862 that approved its construction recorded in Order No. 44 for the proposed railway, “That the section be drawn to the same HORIZONTAL scale as the plan, and to a vertical scale of not less than one inch to every one hundred feet, and shall show the surface of the ground marked on the plan, the intended level of the proposed work, the height of every embankment, and the depth of every cutting, and a DATUM HORIZONTAL LINE which shall be the same throughout the whole length of the work.”

On one occasion he surveyed over one thousand miles of railway which was a perfect straight line all the way. It is well known that in the Argentine Republic and other parts of South America, there are railways thousands of miles long without curve or gradient. In projecting railways, the world is acknowledged to be a plane, and if it were a globe the rules of projection have yet to be discovered. Why is it that certain things can’t be talked about? There are many topics, and I have gone into some of them here – but certainly not all of them – that people avoid talking about. There are those who are into conspiracies that will not tread on other ground. Remember when we already knew a lot about government shenanigans but had not heard of the flat earth? Well, we’ll keep it on the flat earth for this video.

I disagree with what you wrote (see Comment, In Response to a Mormon Reader), but I posted it anyhow for others to read. There are other bloggers who will only post comments that are only 100% in agreement with themselves, I do not. So, let me give you a short answer to what you wrote. Mind you, this is a short response.
I have seen videos by former LDS. So, the fact that they were believers in LDS church at one time, that is enough. Of course, anyone who criticises the church that they were in, would be called liars by those who are still in it! You can apply this to Scientology or to Jehovah’s Witnesses – they do the same thing.
About what you quoted, “in my Father’s house are many mansions,” you are correct, that is in the Bible. However, that does not mean other planets. It does not mean other flat worlds. Mansions are exactly what it means – dwellings for believers in Jesus Christ, NOT other worlds. In fact, as I remember it, the Greek meaning is dwelling levels. Again, this does not mean other worlds – even if they are flat. It just means that some people will have greater rewards in Heaven (bigger homes).
One final thought. We are told that we should not add to the Bible or take away from it. So, not only has this been done, but someone added a whole book! What does Christ say about this?

And what do Mormons do? They not only add some words, they add a whole book – The Book of Mormon!
This will end this discussion. Why? Because I would have to address the same issue over and over again with others. For those who fall into this trap, they will never have the time to continue where they left off. This is exactly what government controllers would like to see.
This gentleman also wrote: “Please, if you are going to write blog posts about what Mormons believe, please base your statements on what we say we believe. Would it be fair or accurate for us to publish articles on your ministery based on the opinions of your critics and detractors?”
Let me ask this person, “Do you believe in Jehovah’s Witness? Do you believe in Scientology?” His answer would probably be “No.” Why? Because he read and possible seen videos by those who left and gave their reasons for doing so.
There are detractors and critics of everything. But everything is not the truth. Therefore, that which is not the truth, there are critics, also. So, being a critic, per se, does not mean that person is lying. You have to look at the facts, the truth. In this case, you have to look on the Word of God. Truth does not fear criticism, for if it is the truth, THEN the critics can be shown that they are wrong. Only liars, a group or religion founded on lies, have fear of the Truth. There are those who honestly think they are telling the truth. But regardless, the Truth is not based on who said it or if they are simply called a critic, but on facts.
So, for those who are really seeking the truth, all they have to do is their research. And while they do it, pray to God that they will have discernment. And, if it means that they will have to leave their church or group, then do so. And when you do, it’s only natural that you will be called all kinds of names or have all kinds of labels put on your – so be it!

Curvature of the earth is never factor in by engineers, surveyors and architects when building their projects – which proves the earth is not a globe. Canals, roadways and rail tracts are always laid horizontally.
Surveyor T. Westwood wrote in 1896 stated, “In leveling, I work from Ordinance marks, or canal levels, to get the height above sea level. The puzzle to me used to be, that over several miles each level was and is treated throughout its whole length as the same level from end to end; not the least allowance being made for curvature. One of the civil engineers in this district, after some amount of argument on each side as to the reason why no allowance for curvature was made, said he did not believe anybody would know the shape of the earth in this life.”
A surveyor and engineer for 30 years wrote to Birmingham Weekly Mercury, 15 Feb., 1890 said, “I am thoroughly acquainted with the theory and practice of civil engineering. However bigoted some of our professors may be in the theory of surveying according to the prescribed rules, yet it is well known amongst us that such theoretical measurements are INCAPABLE OF ANY PRACTICAL ILLUSTRATION. All our locomotives are designed to run on what may be regarded as TRUE LEVELS or FLATS. There are, of course, partial inclines or gradients here and there, but they are always accurately defined and must be carefully traversed. But anything approaching to eight inches in the mile, increasing as the square of the distance, COULD NOT BE WORKED BY ANY ENGINE THAT WAS EVER YET CONSTRUCTED. Taking one station with another all over England and Scotland, it may be stated that all the platforms are ON THE SAME RELATIVE LEVEL. The distance between Eastern and Western coasts of England may be set down as 300 miles. If the prescribed curvature was indeed as represented, the central stations at Rugby or Warwick ought to be close upon three miles higher than a chord drawn from the two extremities. If such was the case there is not a driver or stoker within the Kingdom that would be found to take charge of the train. We can only laugh at those of your readers who seriously give us credit for such venturesome exploits, as running trains round spherical curves. Horizontal curves on levels are dangerous enough, vertical curves would be a thousand times worse, and with our rolling stock constructed as at present physically impossible.”
Canals are built level
“As an engineer of many years standing, I saw that this absurd allowance is only permitted in school books. No engineer would dream of allowing anything of the kind. I have projected many miles of railways and many more of canals and the allowance has not even been thought of, much less allowed for. This allowance for curvature means this – that it is 8” for the first mile of a canal, and increasing at the ratio by the square of the distance in miles; thus a small navigable canal for boats, say 30 miles long, will have, by the above rule an allowance for curvature of 600 feet. Think of that and then please credit engineers as not being quite such fools. Nothing of the sort is allowed. We no more think of allowing 600 feet for a line of 30 miles of railway or canal, than of wasting our time trying to square the circle”
“The distance between the Red Sea at Suez and the Mediterranean Sea is 100 statute miles, the datum line of the Canal being 26 feet below the level of the Mediterranean, and is continued horizontally the whole way from sea to sea, there not being a single lock on the Canal, the surface of the water being parallel with the datum line. It is thus clear that there is no curvature or globularity for the whole hundred miles between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea; had there been, according to the Astronomic theory, the middle of the Canal would have been 1,666 feet higher than at either end, whereas the Canal is perfectly horizontal for the whole distance. The Great Canal of China, said to be 700 miles in length, was made without regard to any allowance for supposed curvature, as the Chinese believe the Earth to be a Stationary Plane. NASA and modern astronomers claim we are living on an oblate spheroid 25,000 statute miles in equatorial circumference with a curvature of 7.935 inches to the mile, varying inversely as the square of the distance, meaning in 3 miles there is a declination of nearly 6 feet, in 30 miles 600 feet, in 300 miles 60,000 feet and so on. Therefore, if we wish to prove or disprove the validity of their convexity claim, it is a fairly simple, straight-forward matter of measurements and calculations.
For example, the distance across the Irish Sea from the Isle of Man’s Douglas Harbor to Great Orm’s Head in North Wales is 60 miles. If the Earth was a globe then the surface of the water between them would form a 60 mile arc, the center towering 1944 feet higher than the coastlines at either end! It is well-known and easily verifiable, however, that on a clear day, from a modest altitude of 100 feet, the Great Orm’s Head is visible from Douglas Harbor. This would be completely impossible on a globe of 25,000 miles. Assuming the 100 foot altitude causes the horizon to appear approximately 13 miles off, the 47 miles remaining means the Welsh coastline should still fall an impossible 1472 feet below the line of sight!

Just the other week I had spoken to a retired physics professor who said that you can’t see beyond a certain range because of the curvature of the earth. Well, I wish that he thinks on this and that he sees this article. He was of such a mental state that it looked like he would come into serious mental conflict from what he was told in collage to what reality tells him. Unfortunately, as of this date, I had not seen him. However, you might meet someone like this and it would be interesting to see how a person would react when faced with text book knowledge and what reality is. Some people can take it (like us) while others would case a great conflict within. More can be written on but I’ll save this for another time.
“In the Times newspaper of Monday, Oct. 16, 1854, in an account of her Majesty’s visit to Great Grimsby from Hull, the following paragraph occurs: ‘Their attention was first naturally directed to a gigantic tower which rises from the center pier to the height of 300 feet, and can be seen 60 miles out at sea.’ The 60 miles if nautical, and this is always understood when referring to distances at sea, would make 70 statute miles, to which the fall of 8 inches belongs, and as all observations at sea are considered to be made at an elevation of 10 feet above the water, for which four miles must be deducted from the whole distance, 66 statute miles will remain, the square of which multiplied by 8 inches, gives a declination towards the tower of 2,904 feet; deducting from this the altitude of the tower, 300 feet, we obtain the startling conclusion that the tower should be at the distance at which it is visible, more than 2,600 feet below the horizon!” –Dr. Samuel Rowbotham, “Earth Not a Globe, 2nd Edition”
Indoctrinated naysayers will often retort that light refraction off the water’s surface could account for such phenomena. To begin with, the idea that we cannot differentiate between the refracted light of something and the thing itself is preposterous, but even assuming we couldn’t, surveyors’ general allowance for refraction is only 1/12th the altitude of the object observed, making it a completely implausible explanation. Using the previous example of 2,600 feet divided by 12 gives 206, which subtracted from 2,600 leaves 2,384 feet that the tower should have remained below the horizon.
