The Bible and the flat earth as it relates to the firmament. To understand the flat earth and God’s creation, we must look at the firmament. What is the firmament and how it relates to creation, we’ll look at the verses that talks about the firmament.
The word “firmament”is Strong’s number 7549, which means “visible arch of the sky.”
All verses, unless otherwise noted, are from the King James Version. My comments will be below the verse starting with C:
Gen_1:6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
C: This firmament divides the waters, but how, we’ll read later.
Gen_1:7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
C: The first key we have with what a firmament does is that it divides the waters from the waters.
Gen_1:8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
C: In this firmament it is called Heaven. Please keep all of this in mind as we read along as I will go back to these verses and comments later.
Gen_1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
C: This firmament, this Heaven has lights in it and it serves a purpose – at least in part – to give us, here on earth light. They also indicate signs, seasons, days and years. This indicates that man will (and should) observe the lights in order to tell us the seasons, etc.
Gen_1:15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
C: What are these lights that give light to the earth? They can be none other than stars. So, these stars in the firmament, which divides the waters and this place is also called heaven.
Gen_1:17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
C: This is a repeat of Gen. 1:15. any time you read of something more than once, you should take note of it. Outside of the Sun, the only thing that gives light to the earth are the stars.
Gen_1:20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
C: Here we read of an open firmament. This section of the firmament would be out atmosphere.
Psa_19:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
C: This firmament must be something we can see as it “sheweth his handywork.” With the stars, doe this not show the beautiful handiwork of God?
Psa_150:1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.
Eze_1:22 And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above.
C: This tells me that the firmament is relatively close “over their heads above.”
Dan_12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
C: Again, the firmament has brightness. By what we’ve read it looks like the firmament is something over or around the earth and it has stars in it. Now, the first thing you’ll going to ask is, “How can this be possible with the stars being from a couple of light years away to billions of light years. Is that the firmament?” I say no, as how can something this huge divide the water of the earth; how would the other “side” of this firmament contain water and still be related to the earth?
What flat earthers believe is that the firmament is made out of some kind of material and that the thickness is something that can be measured in miles and not light years.
Noah Webster wrote the first American dictionary and published it in 1828. Whenever he could he used Scripture. Noah was a real Bible scholar, the likes of which you won’t find today. Reading about the firmament in this dictionary is very revealing…
Here is what Noah Webster said about the firmament:
Firmament
FIRMAMENT, n. ferm’ament. [L. firmamentum, from firmus, firmo.]
The region of the air; the sky or heavens. In scripture, the word denotes an expanse, a wide extent; for such is the signification of the Hebrew word, coinciding with regio, region, and reach. The original therefore does not convey the sense of solidity, but of stretching, extension; the great arch or expanse over our heads, in which are placed the atmosphere and the clouds, and in which the stars appear to be placed, and are really seen.
And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. Gen 1:6.
And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament.
Ibum. 1:14.
Here we read, which Noah got from ancient texts as well as reading the Bible carefully, that the firmament is part of the earth or very close to it. It’s a region, conveys a sense of solidity, a great arch over our heads, the clouds and stars appear.
Since the stars are within this firmament, the stars can’t be what we are told by astronomers – that there is no vast expanse of universe.
I can add more here, but first I’d like to post other articles about the Bible and the flat earth, such as verses on: stars, Moon, Sun, sky and the position of the earth. I don’t want to get ahead of myself without going over the other parts of Creation.
